Asian LGBTQ+ Youth Peer Support Group with Hong Fook
Hong Fook Youth and Family Services partnering with ACAS to run a new monthly LGBTQ+ peer support program for LGBTQ+ Asian youth under 30. The peer support group offers a space for youth to connect and share their experiences around a variety of topics relevant to their lives, including LGBTQ+ and mental health. Together we create a supportive, non-judgemental environment that inspires hope, healing, and change. (790 Bay street, unit 820, Toronto, corner of Bay and College). Date: October 6, 2022 (Thursday) Time: 5-8 PM (5:30 PM light dinner, 6:30 PM presentation) Venue: HQ Toronto (unit 820, 790 Bay Street, Bay and College) During the workshop, Dr. Woodward will deliver: An overview about the Monkeypox virus, how contagious the virus is, how this virus affects the immunocompromised population, and ways to prevent the virus in your daily life. The importance of the vaccine (first or second dose) and the degree of protection. What is the next step in response to the virus in Canada/Toronto Public Health. Queer Asian Joy: Fan Dance
QUEER ASIAN JOY is a project that sparks joy in being queer/trans and Asian. This is a series of classes to learn fan dance styles from various cultural regions in Asia without the segregation of gender. Registration required to reserve your spot in the classes: https://forms.gle/JLS3kEaawQP1n8NH9 These classes are for queer and trans East, Southeast, and mixed Asian folks across all genders along the 2SLGBTQ+ spectrum and for all ages ranging from 18 to 60+. Filipinx Fan Dance with Candace Kumar (Oct 9 & 16) Chinese Fan Dance with Jeffrey Chan (Oct 30 & Nov 6) Vietnamese Fan Dance with Kim Trang Tran (Nov 20 & 27) Dates: Sundays Time: 12pm-2pm Location: Star Dance Centre (Sheppard & Yonge) Address: 4750 Yonge Street, Unit 326, 327 & 331, Toronto, ON M2N 0J6 FREE, no cost! We have space for 20 people per class. Each cultural style will be taught in two classes. You must attend both classes per style. There will be a one week break in between each style before the next set of classes start. You can sign up for 1, 2 or all styles. Please arrive on time. For this forum we are pleased to have 3 panelists with wide-ranging lived and professional experience in the HIV/AIDS sector, from Indigenous, Hispanic, and Asian communities. Claudette Cardinal, Ower Alexander Oberto, and Brian-Bao Ly (panelist bios available below) will speak candidly on their experiences and perspectives on how racialized people/people of color, and their organizations, can learn from, support, and practice solidarity with each other. Our panelists: Claudette Cardinal is a Cree Indigenous woman from Treaty Six territory of Alberta who currently resides on the Unceded traditional territories of the Coast Salish peoples and gives thanks for allowing to be a longtime resident of this territory. She brings twenty eight years of Living Knowledge of HIV/AIDS and works with multiple community-based research projects and is dedicated to bridging community and researchers together in a ‘good way’. Ower Alexander Oberto is a pansexual person living with HIV; he was born and raised in Venezuela. Prior to coming to Canada, he was involved in activism against HIV stigma and homophobia in Venezuela and Latin America.
